Olde Williams and Williams Pub – History

The atmosphere in Olde Williams Restaurant and William’s Pub is reminiscent of the century of colours and temptation! This period gives interesting frames to the pub and a role that is unique. The interior décor is based on the time of William Shakespeare (1554-1616), and his preceding generation. The theme of the restaurant is based on the time of William Shakespeare’s father, Robert Shakespeare while William’s Pub, on the time of William himself. It is said that behind every great man is a woman. William Shakespeare’s father fell in love with a breathtakingly beautiful woman, Lady Elizabeth Arden. She was a joyous and wealthy woman, in the style of Madame Pompadour. In the event, Robert Shakespeare married Mary Arden, believed to have been the sister of Elizabeth. A baby boy was born of Robert and Mary, William Shakespeare.

William’s pub builds on the spirit of of William Shakespeare and of his lifestyle. Maybe it is crude and simple, but in its own way it is fascinating.

The objects on the walls are all of the same kind that would have been used in the time of William Shakespeare. Indeed, the saddles are almost authentic. The crests that decorate the walls are mostly the arms of English towns and cities, but also included is the Shakespeare family crest.

Olde William Restaurant and William’s pub have been modelled on historical facts, using material from that time, and a little imagination. Material in various English museums has been used as a model to recreate a traditional olde English pub interior. The décor was designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara. William’s pub is the oldest pub in Finland, founded on 4th July 1971.
